DD2 Updated Personal Electronic Device Policy

Policy AR JICJ-R

Possession/Use of Personal Electronic Devices or District-Owned Devices

As of January 1, 2025, due to an update in State Department of Education regulations, all DDTwo students in elementary, middle, and high schools are not permitted to use Personal Electronic Devices during the “instructional day.” The instructional school day includes but is not limited to lunch break, class changes, and any other structured or unstructured activities. Personal Electronic Devices or District Owned Devices includes but is not limited to, cell phones, smart watches, gaming devices, phone accessories including headphones and/or earbuds, or other devices that emit an audible signal, vibrate, display a message, display, or record an image, or otherwise summon or deliver a communication to the possessor.

Elementary students will experience no change due to this policy update as it aligns to guidelines set in place at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.

Middle school students (sixth through eighth grade) may possess personal electronic devices on school property provided they are not visible, used, or activated and are kept in the “off” position throughout the instructional school day. Middle school students must keep their personal electronic devices stored in a backpack or other non-visible secure location.

Times of authorized use for middle school are as follows:

  • on school-sponsored transportation
  • after the dismissal bell

High school students (ninth through 12th grade) may possess personal electronic devices as described above on school property provided such devices are stored in a bookbag (not in a purse or on their person) and are kept in the “off” position throughout the instructional school day.

Times of authorized use for high school are as follows:

  • on school-sponsored transportation
  • before the morning tardy bell to begin the instructional day
  • after the dismissal bell at the end of the instructional school day

All Schools: School staff (including bus drivers) reserve the right to immediately require that personal electronic devices be turned off and stored in connection with any safety related initiative.
